Earth Day 2013Once again, the library is celebrating Earth Day with an extended week's worth of programs for all ages. Join us for the following programs:

  • Meatless Mondays: April 22, 7:00 PM. One meatless day per week helps take a big strain off the environment. Door to Door Organics explains.
  • Michigan Made: April 23, 7:00 PM. Taste and experience Michigan made products from Heart of Michigan.
  • Rain Gardens and Live Walls: April 25, 7:00 PM. Learn to create eco-friendly rain gardens and living plant walls with landscaper Jeremy Christianson.
  • Native American Dancers for Mother Earth: April 27, 2:00 PM. Enjoy the rhythmic sounds and beautiful dance that celebrates Mother Earth.

Learn to Use PCCS MIStar

Do you have a student in the Plymouth Canton Community Schools? Learn how to use MIStar, formerly called Zangle, to track your student's school progress, absences, assignments and grades. Maria Panek, IT expert from PCCS, guides you through a hands-on class where you'll learn how to log in and use all the features available so you can help your student stay on track. These sessions take place in the Canton Public Library's Internet Lab. Two sessions are available:

Wear Your Favorite Jersey Day

Celebrate the mid-season classic, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, by wearing your favorite jersey or team shirt to the library on July 10. You can claim your Game On badge, plus enter your name for a prize drawing. Look for the entry box at the Reception Desk.

The 83rd All Star game and surrounding festivities will be held at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. Representing the Detroit Tigers will be the American League starting pitcher Justin Verlander, Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera. For more information on the All-Star Game, check out this book:

Chalk CPL

Great art can happen in any medium and to prove that, artists from D&M Art Studio will be here on July 9 at 6:00 PM to create chalk art versions of our Detroit Institute of Arts Inside|Out masterpieces. See what they create, and then cover the CPL sidewalks with your own chalk work of art in this all-ages activity. Artists will also be at Cherry Hill Village so be sure to stop out there and see the Inside|Out art and chalk recreations.

DIA Free Admission for Canton Residents

Now in its third year, Inside|Out brings reproductions of great treasures from the Detroit Institute of Arts into the community.  After discovering these pieces around Canton, visit the real thing at the DIA on July 15 when Canton residents receive free museum admission. Present your driver’s license or state ID and receive four complimentary general admissions to the Detroit Institute of Arts. Does not include admission to special exhibitions.

DIA Inside|Out

We are pleased to be part of the Detroit Institute of Arts Inside|Out program, which brings high-quality reproductions of masterpieces from the DIA's collection to the streets. There are six pieces displayed in Canton, including Young Woman with a Violin by Italian painter Orazio Gentileschi, on display at the library. The painting, circa 1612, depicts the patron saint of musicians, Cecelia.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation sponsors this program.
