Bestselling Author Jeffrey Zaslow to Appear at Library

This event has been canceled due to the death of the guest of honor.

CANTON, MI—Journalist and bestselling author Jeffrey Zaslow will speak Thursday, February 23 at 7:00 PM at the Canton Public Library. Zaslow’s newest novel, The Magic Room: A Story About the Love We Wish for our Daughters, debuted in January and recounts the hopes, dreams and transformations of thousands of women who visit Becker’s Bridal Salon in Fowler, Michigan.

He is also the author of The Girls from Ames: A Story of Women and Friendship and coauthor of The Last Lecture with Randy Pausch, and more recently, Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope with Gabrielle Giffords and Mark Kelly. The National Society of Newspaper Columnists twice named Zaslow the best columnist in a newspaper with more than 100,000 circulation. In 2008, he received the Distinguished Column Writing Award from the New York Newspaper Publishers Association.

Zaslow’s appearance at the Canton Public Library is sponsored by the Friends of the Canton Public Library. It is free and open to the public. The library is located at 1200 S. Canton Center Road in Canton, MI.

Library Schedules Discussions for Challenged Books

To foster a sense of community and provide an opportunity for calm conversation, the Canton Public Library will host a book discussion for two book titles whose inclusion in the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools AP English curriculum was recently challenged.

Beloved, by Toni Morrison, will be the featured title of a February 27, 7:00 PM discussion and Waterland, by Graham Swift, will be discussed on March 27 at 7:00 PM.

"By hosting a discussion of these books, we can give our community a shared experience and promote a dialogue around the perspectives each individual brings from reading the book," says Rebecca Havenstein-Coughlin, department head of adult services. "The public library is an excellent forum for connecting our community in this manner."

The discussion will be led by library staff and is open to anyone in the Plymouth-Canton community ages 16 and older. Those interested in participating may register and pick up a copy of the book at the Canton Public Library beginning January 30.

Student Group Stages Benefit Concert for CPL

The benefit concert is sold out.

A local Destination Imagination team composed of students from Canton are staging a benefit concert on Saturday, January 14, 6:30-8:30 PM in the library's Community Room, with proceeds being donated to the Canton Public Library. The concert will feature performances by local youth and concessions will be available. Consider supporting these students and the library. Tickets are available at the Reception Desk for $8 and, when you buy one ticket at the full price, you can get a second ticket half off.

We are delighted to have been chosen by this group of students for their community project, which asks them to find a community need and address that need with their project. They will be entering their project in a local DI competition in February and we wish them good luck.

Stuff the Truck Diaper Drive

On November 16 and 17, the library will be hosting a diaper drive to benefit the Detroit Area Diaper Bank. For a fourth straight year, the number of children living in poverty is up and many families in our community struggle to provide clean diapers for babies, the handicapped and elderly. Last year we collected over 26,000 diapers to help Michigan families. We need your help to stuff the truck donated by Fat Chef in a Little Coat catering. Bring diapers, any brand or size, baby through adult, to the library on November 16 and 17. Open packages are acceptable; if diapers are loose, please indicate size on the package.

The Detroit Area Diaper Bank is a Canton-based nonprofit charitable organization helping to meet the need for diapers at partner agencies working with people in crisis.

Canton Public Library Receives Grant from Target for Family Reading Program

CANTON, MI—The Canton Public Library announced the renewal of a $2,000 Target grant to be used to continue to support the Family Reading Night program.

“Our partnership with Target continues with the awarding of this grant, which allows the Canton Public Library and the Friends of the Canton Public Library to maintain our commitment to early childhood literacy and improving lives in our community,” said Eva Davis, library director.

Over 2000 people have participated in the Target Family Reading Night program since its 2009 inception. The program offers stories, games and snacks to families with children ages 4-9 and provides a book for the family to take home and share. It encourages early childhood literacy by demonstrating techniques and supplying a book for families to model at home.

The Friends of the Canton Public Library also sponsor this program. “At Target, our local grants are making a difference in communities across the country,” said Laysha Ward, President, Community Relations, Target. “We’re proud to partner with the Canton Public Library as part of our ongoing commitment to strengthen communities where our guests and team members live and work.”

For information on the Family Reading Night Program or to register for the program, visit www.cantonpl.org or call the library at 734-397-0999.
