Do you think that completing all 36 badges in the Connect Your Summer program is impossible for adults? While it can be daunting, a good strategy makes it totally doable. Here are some tips from experienced CYS participants, who have completed the 36 badge challenge numerous times.

  1. Now is not the time to read War and Peace. Look for short books, like these.
  2. Always carry a book with you. Ten minutes waiting for soccer practice to end can turn into ten minutes of reading time.
  3. Find a book with lots of pictures.
  4. Or a book that is all pictures. It's not cheating--it's a Graphic Novel.
  5. Listen to a book. It's entertaining and you can claim an e-Lectrified badge.
  6. Set aside some time to read every day. Maybe a half hour in the morning, or while you eat lunch.
  7. Try a Young Adult title. Good content, quick reads and you might relate to your teenager better.
  8. Have two or three books available. That way if you aren't in the mood for one, you can read a different one.
  9. Make good use of the recommended lists for each badge.
  10. Download a book to your phone or tablet so you always have a book with you.
  11. Find a book your family will enjoy and take turns reading out loud. That counts, even if you are reading a children's book.
  12. Try something different, like poetry, perhaps, or short stories.
  13. Read something that can help you professionally. Bill Gates likes these, and he seems to do okay for himself.
  14. Magazines! Grab one off the shelf, or check out one of the 175 or so available online with Zinio.
  15. Plan a weekly trip to the library and attend a program or complete an On the Scene activity.
  16. Participate in the Big Library Read and combine an e-book with a book discussion, all online.
  17. Browse our Short Story collection to find a quick read.
  18. Use library materials to inspire a daily chore, like cooking dinner. You have to eat anyway, right?
  19. Challenge someone to participate with you. Motivate each other, attend programs together, or trade reading suggestions.
  20. Don't procrastinate. And don't give up. The final day to claim badges is August 17: plan accordingly.
Liberty Fest logo

Canton's annual Liberty Fest celebrates its 25th anniversary with three days packed full of family-friendly activities in Heritage Park, directly behind the library. Due to the heavy volume of traffic and the increased need for parking spaces, the library will close at 3:00 PM on Thursday, June 16 for Canton Liberty Fest, and will remain closed on Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18. We will re-open on Sunday, June 19 at noon.

On the morning of June 2, workers will be replacing a roof top air conditioner at the library. While the crane is operation, access to certain parts of the library will be restricted to staff and public, including the west drive and book donation drop off, loading dock, and Secondhand Prose Used Book Store. Please follow the direction of library and installation staff. The work is expected to be complete by late afternoon.

After nearly three months of renovation, we have opened the Children's Library. Please stop by and explore the space and mark your calendar for our big celebration on April 24.

Learn about American Muslims in our community and their culture in an interactive program on February 27, 9:00 AM-1:00 PM.

Drop in and try your hand at Arabic calligraphy, enjoy coffee and international delicacies, get a henna design, speak one-on-one with Muslim members of our community and ask questions about Islam and its belief system.

This event is sponsored by the Muslim American Society of Detroit, the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs, the Canton Public Library and the Canton Response to Hate Crimes Coalition. It is part of an initiative entitled “Not In Our Town: Stop Hate Together” a program for people and communities working together to stop hate, address school bullying and build safe, inclusive environments for all.

The Children's Library is now closed while the space is renovated and is expected to reopen in early April. Select materials have been relocated the the East End of the library. We will make every effort to provide you with the materials you need and encourage you to take advantage of the reciprocal borrowing privileges you have as a Canton Public Library cardholder. This is also a great time to check out the robust collection of e-media available for children, in print, audio and video formats. Children's programming will continue to be presented.

Follow the progress of our construction on Facebook and Flickr, and join us in April for the grand reopening of the Children's Library.

We are beginning to move children's materials back into the Children's Library. If you need assistance locating an item, please see staff for assistance.

Children's Library Items are on the Move

In preparation for the Children's Library renovation, which begins in earnest on January 4, 2016, we have begun moving materials and clearing out supplies and furnishings. Relocated materials will be shelved in the East End of the library; other items will be packed for storage and inaccessible. We will make every attempt to provide you with the services you need during this transition process; however, some furnishings and computers will be removed from the space during the week of December 21. Children's Library users may access computers in the main library and Teen Place. The space will be closed to the public beginning December 31. Ask any staff member for help in locating what you need.
