U.S.P.I.S. Shred Day

The library is teaming up with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) to host a document shred event on Tuesday, March 4, from 10:00 AM- 3:00 PM. Bring up to four boxes (approximately 300 lbs.) of personal documents, like old tax returns and other sensitive materials, to be shredded free of charge. Please remove large binder clips from documents; paper clips and staples are allowed. While your documents are being shredded, learn about various fraud schemes and how to protect yourself. The shredder will be in the parking lot on the west side of the building. Pull around the drive in your vehicle and follow directional arrows. This event is for personal document shredding only.

Library construction is complete!

Thank you for your patience as we worked to make improvements to our library. Work was completed on time and under budget.  To see a photo album of the process, check out our Facebook album or Flickr set.

 

Patron Service Improvement Project (PSIP) Information

The library embarked on a construction project to renovate patron service points in the central area of the library to accommodate the changing ways our patrons use the library and to fulfill our core values of Relevance, Access, Integrity and Leadership.

These changes provide improved patron service with one access point for all services, including circulation and reference help. The new configuration is designed for one-on-one interactions and reflects the library's 2012 strategic plan and commitment to service excellence.

During the construction, some areas of the library were inaccessible to patrons. The main entrance was closed for a period of two weeks except for access to the Community Room, Jungle Java Express and restrooms. Other areas of the library were also  inaccessible to the public for periods of time.

The Patron Service Improvement Project accomplished the following:

  • Bring this area of the library into compliance with the  ADA
  • Improve traffic flow
  • Provide more personalized reference help
  • Deliver an efficient checkout desk experience
  • Add more self checkout stations
  • Centrally locate and consolidate printer/copier work area
  • Create additional seating areas
  • Replace worn flooring
  • Updated technology

Budget

The budget for the project is $361,733. As a result of careful financial stewardship and community support for this planned expenditure, the library will pay for the project with a one-time fund balance transfer of $346,733 and an additional $15,000 from the 2014 operating budget.

Bruce FeilerCPL is excited to host author Bruce Feiler on October 29 at 7:00 PM at the Hindu Temple of Canton.

Feiler's book, The Secrets of Happy Families: Improve Your Mornings, Rethink Family Dinner, Fight Smarter, Go Out and Play and Much More, is this year's Everyone's Reading selection. He is a columnist for the Sunday New York Times and the author of six consecutive New York Times bestsellers, including The Council of Dads and Walking the Bible, and hosts the PBS series of the same name.

Canton Public Library cardholders in good standing may receive free tickets to this event by presenting their card at the library Help Desk. some tickets available at the door.

Recipe Exchange Kiosk

Calling all cooks! We're bringing back last summer's popular recipe exchange kiosk. It's a great way to share your favorite recipes, discover some new ones and earn your Chow Down badge. Use our recipe card or just print out your recipes and deliver them, paper clipped together, to the recipe exchange kiosk located by the Reception Desk. If you prefer to share your recipe online, simply add the recipe in a comment to this blog post.

Apron Day

apronParticipate in CPL's Apron Day on July 31, earn your Chow Down badge and you could win a prize! We will have prizes for the following categories:

  • Themed Apron: an apron that expresses a theme, like a holiday or flowers.
  • Craziest Apron: Original and wacky-- that's what we are looking for here.
  • My Story Apron: Submit a story or memory surrounding your apron, like baking cookies with Grandma.

To enter the contest, claim your Chow Down badge by uploading a photo of yourself wearing your apron (or just a photo of your apron if you are camera shy) and write the category in the comments. Or come in to the library on July 31 between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM, fill out an entry form and get your picture taken. Photos will be posted online for public voting. May the best apron win!
