We are welcoming back Sylvan Learning Center on Saturday, May 21, 9:30 AM-1:00 PM to administer a full length SAT practice test. This test  is open to teens aged 14-17.  Participants are to bring their own calculator and pencils. They must attend the entire session. Registration is required and although participants do not need to be Canton residents, they do need to have a valid library card entered in the CPL system to register. Registration begins April 26.

Please Note: Sylvan administers one form of the SAT diagnostic test. If you attend more than one of these sessions, you will be repeating the same test each time.  As a result, any improvements in SAT score from one Sylvan session to another may not accurately reflect how one might do on the actual SAT test.

On the second Monday of each month,  the highly trained staff from Starfish Family Services will present selected Early  Learning Community workshops for parents, caregivers and daycare providers. Join us on Monday, May 9 from 6:30-8:30PM to explore Partnerships with Children.  Participants will learn to play, teach and learn by letting their children lead.  Interactive conversing and building meaningful partnerships will also be discussed.

The Montessori method and philosophy is well proven and scientific. It is process oriented and helps the child normalize in a prepared environment and utilize his/her fullest potential. This method has worked for 100 plus years and if used will lay a solid foundation for your childrens' lives. The aim of this on-going program is to provide parents the necessary tools to prepare their environment to suit the needs of their child, to set simple and workable ground rules and to help their child build his/her concentration, confidence, coordination, independence and order. The program's vision is to create a positive and joyful parenting experience that helps the child develop in all aspects of life. Parents may receive lesson plans from actual school environments to use or make at home. This program is presented by the staff from Banyan Montessori Academy.

Starfish University: "Why Aren't my Child and I Clicking?"

During this free, new, 4-week series, Starfish University takes on the question, "Why aren't my child and I clicking?" by exploring Attachment Theory in parenting.

Research says that parents and caregivers can have a greater impact on children’s outcomes than early childhood interventions.  Thus it is critical for Starfish to provide a wide range of robust programs to support parents (grandparents, caregivers, etc)  to build up their adult capacity and increase their effectiveness in supporting children.

Starfish University aims to help parents and caregivers develop a full range of skills and resources.  In doing so, the program supports all four SFS goals to ensure that parents have (1) Hope, confidence and motivation to grow and succeed, (2) A positive social / professional network, (3) Parenting knowledge skills and resources, and (4) Stability through access to resources in basic needs, economic opportunity, training and education. The "University" will be in session at multiple locations from May 2 - August 29 with topics ranging from Natural Hair Care to Scrapbooking to Friend of the Court Workshops. Please contact Jackee Brown to register for the CPL class.
