Canton Public Library Book Purchase Enrichment Fund

eBook Big Library Read October 2018

The Big Library Read is a “global eBook club,” connecting readers around the world who read the same eBook at the same time. The 2018 fall selection is:   The Girl with the Red Balloon by Katherine Locke. In this fantasy book written for young adults, sixteen-year-old Ellie Baum accidentally time-travels via red balloon to 1988 East Berlin, where she’s caught up in a conspiracy of history and magic.   

The Big Library Read runs from October 1 through 15, and during this time OverDrive offers unlimited checkouts on the title. No hold list and no waiting!

Citizens For Peace Donation

In 2018, the library received a generous donation from Citizens for Peace to purchase books and dvds. Citizens for Peace is a nonprofit, nonpartisan group pursuing nonviolent solutions to conflict and creating a culture of peace. The items purchased cover a broad spectrum of youth and adult materials on peace-building and promoting a tolerant and just society. In the Beatitudes, Jesus says of the meek, "they will inherit the earth." Meekness, John Dear argues, is the biblical word for nonviolence. He makes the connection Jesus makes at the start of his Sermon on the Mount between our practice of nonviolence and our unity with creation. Drawing on personal stories, John Dear invites us to return to nonviolence as a way of life and a way of living in solidarity with Earth and its creatures.

On a hot summer afternoon in 1928, the leaders of the world assembled in Paris to outlaw war. Within the year, the treaty signed that day, known as the Peace Pact, had been ratified by nearly every state in the world. War, for the first time in history, had become illegal the world over. But the promise of that summer day was fleeting. Within a decade of its signing, each state that had gathered in Paris to renounce war was at war. And in the century that followed, the Peace Pact was dismissed as an act of folly and an unmistakable failure. This book argues that that understanding is inaccurate, and that the Peace Pact ushered in a sustained march toward peace that lasts to this day.
