Experience to Go Kits: Electrify Your Winter 2020

As part of Electrify Your Winter, we have five new Experience To Go Kits. These start-up kits are filled with fun tools, books, music and more to drive away your winter blues. We created a variety of kits to help you jump-start that New Year's resolution, enjoy a family night or simply have a calmer, sunnier week.

From January 12 until the end of April, we have the following kits:

  • Cabin Fever: This kit offers a variety of activities for both quiet contemplation and rowdy socialization, including a foam axe-throwing game, a jigsaw puzzle, crossword puzzles, house-themed coloring sheets with markers, and a deck of cards.
  • Relax and Rejuvenate: Winter can be stressful on your mind and body. This kit is here to bring some relaxation and rejuvenation into your week. Use the light therapy lamp to chase away the blues on a sunless day. If you are a light sleeper, try the white noise machine!
  • Sing It!: The Sing It! kit has nearly everything you need for a fun night of karaoke or lip-sync battles in your own home. It includes a Bluetooth karaoke microphone, music, lyrics, props, and more.
  • Snow Day: The Snow Day kit will help you enjoy the winter weather both outside and in. Highlights of this box include a great snow themed book and a do-it-yourself snowman.
  • Spark Your Year: Dream, create and plan to live your best life with this kit. Bullet journaling tools and inspiration from our Spark Sheets will help you reflect on the year past and create a vision for 2020.

e-Audio on cloudLibrary

Beginning in January 2020 the Canton Public Library will purchase e-audiobooks on cloudLibrary instead of OverDrive. Older e-audiobooks will remain on OverDrive, but cloudLibrary is now the place for new e-audiobooks.

This move to cloudLibrary allows us to join the Michigan cloudLink group--which means you will have access to available e-book and e-audiobooks from cloudLink libraries across the state, and you will have more choices to listen to and read.

With cloudLibrary, you'll find the best selection of newly released e-audiobooks, plus a large selection of e-books through the cloudLink system, which allows Michigan libraries to share e-books and e-audiobooks. This means that you will have access to items from libraries throughout the state.

Never Miss Another Hold

On iOS and Android devices, you will now get push notifications about your loans and holds by default on your Libby app for OverDrive e-books. You can choose which notifications you’d like to receive from the Libby menu under Manage Notifications, including:
• When a hold becomes available
• When a loan is about to expire
• When a loan has expired
• And more!

eBook Big Library Read November 2019

The Big Library Read is a “global eBook club,” connecting readers around the world who read the same eBook at the same time. The 2019 fall selection is the YA title, I’m Not Dying with You Tonight, by Kimberly Jones and Gilly Segal. Over the course of one night, two girls with two very different backgrounds must rely on each other to get through the violent race riot that has enveloped their city in this debut novel.

The Big Library Read runs from November 4 through November 18, and during this time OverDrive offers unlimited checkouts on the title. No hold list and no waiting!

Libraries Transform eBook Pick on OverDrive

The Libraries Transform Book Pick is a new digital reading program that connects readers nationwide by offering free access to the same ebook through public libraries. OverDrive will offer unlimited copies of the After the Flood by Kassandra Montag during the reading period October 7-21, 2019.

After the Flood is set a little more than a century from now. Rising floodwaters have obliterated America’s great coastal cities and then its heartland, leaving nothing but an archipelago of mountaintop colonies surrounded by a deep expanse of open water. 

Stubbornly independent Myra and her precocious seven-year-old daughter, Pearl, fish from their small boat, the Bird. For seven years, Myra has grieved the loss of her oldest daughter, Row, who was stolen by her father after a monstrous deluge overtook their home in Nebraska. When Myra suddenly discovers that Row was seen in a far-off encampment near the Arctic Circle, Myra and Pearl embark on a perilous voyage into the icy northern seas, hoping against hope that Row will still be there.

Experiences To Go: Fall 2019

The Canton Public Library wants to help you have fun this autumn. Our Experience to Go Kits are designed to give you entertaining and informational experiences to help you enjoy your fall to the fullest. Indoors and out, we've got great ideas for you and your family to explore!

From October 1st until the end of December, we will have the following kits:

  • Autumn Adventure: Have fun with the included camera lens and binoculars while getting some time in walking in the fall wonderland using the included trails book, or visit an old favorite that draws you in.
  • Card-making Party: Explore your creativity and celebrate others! Gather your friends and loved ones to create cards that will inspire kindness and brighten days.
  • Family History: Use the Family Gathering game as a conversation starter to share memories across the generations, then dig into the research with the guide and charts provided.
  • Ghost Hunting: Explore local and Michigan legends as you ghost hunt in your own back yard.
  • Totally Tubular 80's: Test your skill with Trivial Pursuit Totally 80's, or a mini-arcade game. Then kick back with some awesome crafts while watching a classic 80's movie.

Book Purchase Enrichment Fund

In 2017 the Canton Public Library Book Purchase Enrichment Fund was created through a generous anonymous donation from appreciative readers. This donation enhances our print collection through the purchase of literary fiction and literary genre fiction; or quality narrative nonfiction primarily in the areas of science, social science, the humanities, literary biographies, and history. If you're interested in contributing to the Canton Public Library Book Purchase Enrichment Fund, contact the fund's administrator, the Canton Community Foundation. Following are just a few of the books this thoughtful donation has allowed us to purchase in 2019. To find a complete list of books librarians have purchased with this money, keyword search the terms Book Purchase Enrichment Fund in our catalog.
