…and a Happy New Year

Looking for a film to ring in the New Year for your kids? One that you can show early? Like around 8? Look no further than CPL! Here are some options:

Winnie the Pooh [videodisc]: a very merry Pooh year by Walt Disney Home Entertainment — Winnie the Pooh and friends make New Year resolutions not to bother Rabbit

Year without a Santa Claus [videodisc]: Nestor the long-eared Christmas donkey, Rudolph's shiny new year — Rudolph helps Father Time locate a missing New Year baby

I want a dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown [videodisc] — Catch Happy New Year Charlie Brown, a bonus film on this DVD. Charlie Brown invites the Little Red Haired Girl to a New Year's Eve Party.

Sesame Street celebrates around the world [videodisc] by Children's Television Workshop — Celebrate New Year's Sesame Street style.

Free iPad Picture Books

Yes, Please! If you have ever accessed TumbleBooks through Canton Public Library, you know that they have fun interactive stories for kids. They've recently begun adding stories in iPad format. From the front page, select the red "Storybooks" button. On the next page, choose the green "iPad Books" button. There are currently only 50 books listed, but the plan is to add more soon. Happy Reading!

New Holiday Videos

Every year in December a bumper crop of new Holiday Kids Movies makes their debut. This year is no exception with many of the new films starring characters kids recognize from their favorite movies. Many of these movies are available at CPL now, with more on the way in the coming weeks. These are great solutions when you need some down time to make dinner (or squirrel away to wrap some gifts). Here are some of this year's offerings:

Merry Madagascar [videodisc] by DreamWorks Animation LLC

Penguins of Madagascar [videodisc]: The all-nighter before Xmas

Christmas with the chipmunks [videodisc] by Bagdasarian Productions LLC

The Smurfs. Holiday celebration [videodisc] by Turner, Hanna Barbera production

VeggieTales. The little drummer boy [videodisc]

Fables and Fairy Tales on DVD

If you've enjoyed watching The Monkey's Heart puppet show that was posted on our website this week, there are many more similar resources here at the library! The Grammy Award winning Rabbit Ears series are narrated by celebrities and cover a broad range of stories. Animated Tales from Around the World by Schlessinger Media combines two short native stories from one country. You can find both of these series in our fairy tale section of the children's library.

October 7th is Ada Lovelace Day

Today, October 7th, is Ada Lovelace Day. Ada Lovelace, daughter of poet Lord Byron, is regarded to be the first computer programmer. In honor of her, this day is designated for the recognition of the achievements of women in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. It would be a great day to check out a book on women inventors, astronaunts, or mathematicians. Or stimulate your own daughter's interest in one or more of these subjects with one of our many science films from here in the library. My favorite is the Disney Imagineering Series. Another good option is The Way Things Work, based of the David Macauley book by the same name.

Family Movie Night

When the weekend weather forcast is like this weekend's — cold, rainy, and dreary — Families start looking for something to do inside. Have a movie marathon! Pop some popcorn, blend up some milkshakes, and pick up some movies from Canton Public Library. Here are a few themes to get you started:

Classics

That movie that you loved as a kid that you can't find anywhere? We may have it here.

The parent trap [videodisc] by Walt Disney Productions

Swiss family Robinson [videodisc]

The great race [videodisc] by Warner Bros. and Patricia- Jalem-Reynard Co.

Baseball

Uh, the Tigers are the AL Central Division Champs! Celebrate with some baseball themed movies:

Third and Fourth Grade Book Discussion

If you had a mean old principal, what would you do? George and Harold take matters into their own hands, and the results is the Epic Novels of Captain Underpants. On August 17th at 2:00PM, third and fourth graders are invited to join us as we read and discuss The Adventures of Captain Underpants. And probably laugh a lot too. Registration begins August 3rd. Don't forget to pick up your book at the Children's Reference Desk!

International Games

Kids around the world like to have fun just like you. They just do it a little differently. Come learn some new games at our International Games Day on July 26th at 1:00PM. If it is nice and sunny, we'll meet out behind the library. The rain location is the Community Room inside the library. If you haven't earned your Multicultural Badge yet, this is a fun, easy way to claim it!
