The new OverDrive Kids Reading Room opens this week, just in time for Connect Your Summer. The Kids Reading Room makes it easier for kids to find and download eBooks and audiobooks just for them! You can search by book cover, reading or interest level or subject. Many of your favorite books that are checked out in the library are available as an eBook or audiobook. Then download and go! It's a great idea to check here before going on any summer trips. Happy Reading.

It's Screen-Free Week

This week, May 5th-11th is Screen-Free Week. Presented by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, Screen-Free Week encourages families to spend a week without entertainment screen media--i.e. no TV watching, video game playing or internet surfing for entertainment's sake.  Instead families spend the week doing things together, being creative and getting active.  Want to participate?  There are ideas on the official Screen-Free Week website, or Canton Public Library has lots of resources to help you think of fun things to do.

New Homework Resources

We've highlighted three new kid friendly resources on the databases section of our Kids page. They are great for homework helps or just for fun!

Early World of Learning: This is a collection of a basic encyclopedia, games and stories for our youngest patrons. There are lots of opportunities for early literacy learning fun here!

NoveList K8 Plus: Finished that series you really like and can't decide what to read next? This database provides lots of help finding read-a-likes. Does your school use Lexile Levels? You can search by Lexile Level here.

World Book Kids: The well loved physical encyclopedia set in database form. If you need pictures for an assignment, this is a great place to look.

Resources for Children's App Reviews

Are you interested in finding vetted, age appropriate apps for your child to use on your mobile device? There are several great web sites out there that do just that!

CommonSenseMedia : The website that reviews children's movies, games, books and TV shows also does apps. If you are concerned about content like violence or consumerism, you'll like this website which highlights this information in the "What Parents Need to Know" section.

Best Apps for Kids: This website, developed by a mom, lets you look for apps by age, device, category or education. And they highlight free apps on Friday.

Best Kids Apps: Another site where the reviews are written by moms, this site covers the fun and games as well as the educational. You can narrow your results by platform on this site, which significantly sharpens your search at the start. There's also a link at the home page highlighting the currently popular apps.

The iMums: This is a global review site, with review from moms from all over the world. Reviews of apps for Moms and Dads and for those with Special Needs make this one unique.

Escape from Lemoncello's Library--the Canton Library Version

In the very popular book Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library, a group of tweens must use their wits to solve puzzles and escape from the new public library. Think you are up to the challenge? Students ages 9 to 12 years old can join us on Saturday, November 9 at 2:00 PM in the Purple Room for a scavenger hunt based on the book. You might even learn a little bit about the Dewey Decimal system while you're having so much fun. Registration is required and begins on October 25.
