Journey to Freedom - Underground Railroad in Washtenaw County

The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes, hidden places, determined citizens and self-liberated people of color seeking freedom. Two essential routes to Detroit and ultimate safety in Canada crossed in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.  Deborah Meadows, Program Chair from the African American Cultural and Historical Museum of Washtenaw County, will take us on a virtual tour of nationally-known Underground Railroad landmarks, historic sites, cemeteries, buildings and homes.

This program will take place via Zoom and registration is required. Zoom links will be emailed to registered participants 24 hours before the program

Evanston's Living History

Filmmaker Craig Dudnick (Alice’s Ordinary People) will give a presentation about his documentary, Evanston's Living History - The Fight to Escape Racial Discrimination. This film explores the evolution of Evanston, Illinois and the citizens who confronted racism in the city and made it a better place to live. Many of these activists were descendants of African Americans who migrated north during the early 20th Century; they include the family of Anthony Crawford, a prominent African-American businessman and community leader who was lynched when he refused to give up his place in line to a white man. Evanston community leaders also joined the fight to help pass United States Resolution 39, which apologized for the failure of the Senate to enact anti-lynching legislation.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A and discussion with the filmmaker.

This event will take place via Zoom and registration is required. Zoom links will be sent to all registered participants 24 hours before the program.

The film, Evanston's Living History - The Fight to Escape Racial Discrimination, can be viewed via Kanopy with your Canton Public Library card.
