Participate in themed-builds in Minecraft's Creative Mode with your friends, collaborate, show off your skills, and provide feedback for future events. You never know when we may go survival mode. No swearing or griefing will be allowed. Participants must have a basic knowledge of the game and have their own PC account. Demo, Playstation and XBox accounts are not compatible with our server. Registration is required.

For kids ages 7 years old & up: Thursday March 17 from 1:00-2:30 PM  in the iLab.

There are a number of books that deal with similar stories or events in history that have been adapted for younger audiences. Several other topics are covered by multiple ages for multiple age ranges. Pick one of these for yourself and one for your child, and discuss aspects of history as a family.

 

 

Extraordinary Zoo Stories During WWII

The zookeeper's wife : a war story by Diane Ackerman

When Germany invaded Poland, bombers devastated Warsaw-- and the city's zoo along with it. With most of their animals dead, zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski began smuggling Jews into the empty cages. Another dozen "guests" hid inside the Zabinskis' villa, emerging after dark for dinner, socializing and, during rare moments of calm, piano concerts. Jan, active in the Polish resistance, kept ammunition buried in the elephant enclosure and stashed explosives in the animal hospital. Family Reading Night -- Pigs

Celebrate Pig Day at our Family Reading Night on Tuesday, March 1, from 7:00-8:00 PM in our Community Room. Attendees, ages 4-8, will hear pig themed stories, participate in a series of activities, and receive a free book to add to their own personal library. Registration begins January 26.

Saturday STEM -- Computer Programming

Children in grades 2-5 interested in science, technology, engineering and math will learning something new each month in a STEM topic. This month, receive a crash course in computer programming and make geometric designs to take home. Saturday February 27, from 2:00-3:00 PM in the iLAB. Registration is required.

Saturday STEM Geometry

Mix up a little science, some technology, engineering and math and what do you get? A fun way for families and children in grades 2-5 to learn new things. Children interested in learning computer programming next month will benefit from attending this program, which will provide a hands-on introduction to angles and basic geometry. Saturday January 16, from 2:00-3:00 PM in the Community Room. Registration is required.

Share a Story: Toy Storytime

Did you miss our Toys storytime this week? Don't worry, here's what you missed, plus a few more suggestions for a toy themed storytime of your own. The books with stars before the title were shared this evening. It can be a good opportunity to talk with children about sharing, losing, or forgoing toys they have outgrown as times for new toys approach, like birthdays or the holidays.

We also danced to Toy Boat by Jim Gill from his Irrational Anthem CD and found our missing teddy bear hiding under different colored circles. We used a flannel board, but you could do the same thing with pots, boxes, or pillow cases.
