Family Reading Night - Caldecott

CPL's Family Reading Nights continue to be an excellent ongoing celebration of literacy, sharing stories and FUN! Participants will experience engaging themes coupled with exciting activities. We will even have a free drawing of books to help grow your own personal library. This program is for children ages 4-9 and their families. Registration is required and begins January 23.

Listen to books that have won the Caldecott award in recognition for their illustrations. We'll also be including the winner of the Canton Public Library's Mock Caldecott Award. Then participate in activities themed around the books.

For the last 80 years, librarians gather to award the Caldecott Medal to the artist of the most distinguished book with pictures for children. Basically an award for Best Pictures! We've done some of the heavy lifting and chosen eight contenders. Starting January 20, visit the Children's Library each week to vote on your favorite book. Copies of all the contenders will be available to read and examine. The titles with the top votes will continue on to the next week's voting. We'll announce our winner on Monday, February 12 when the winner of the real award will be revealed.

You can find a list of previous winners here. We'll read both winners along with other Caldecott honorees at a special event in February, so watch our calendar for more information.

The movie Wonder, based on the smash hit novel by R.J. Palacio, is hitting theaters this weekend. If you haven't read the book yet, you can add your name to the hold list for either the book, audiobook, or ebook. If you're looking for more feel good stories featuring an underdog student, we've compiled a list of suggestions.

Also available in: audiobook

While Harvey and Irma have already made landfall, hurricane season has begun with a bang in the southeast states. Since we don't experience this weather phenomenon locally, here are some books featuring both fictional and factual stories about surviving the storm what some other parts of the country experience.

Picture Books and Readers

Various wetland creatures, from alligators to egrets, enjoy what begins as a calm and peaceful day in the bayou, then prepare for and endure a passing hurricane, and finally settle in for a peaceful night.

Stories featuring scientists and curious characters might inspire readers to explore and experiment with things they encounter. Find some suggestions below, then find an adult who can assist with your own observations and search for answers. Do you get the same results as the characters you read about?

NOTE: While we have divided the titles into groups for children in grades 2-5 and children in 5th grade and older, we recognize children read at different levels at different times in their lives. It is up to the child and their parent to determine which of these suggestions are appropriate for them.
