We're Celebrating the Irish with Terry Murphy

We all claim to be a wee bit Irish this time of year.  Come celebrate with Irish folk singer, Terry Murphy.  Murphy will get your toes tapping and your Irish eyes smiling with his authentic, heartfelt music.  Grab your shamrocks and hurry over to the Canton Public Library on Monday, March 18 at 7:00 PM for this special concert.

Women Who Changed America

In celebration of Women's History Month, we are pleased to host two luminaries from our past:  former first lady Mary Todd Lincoln and famous author Beatrix Potter.  Re-enactor Marie Papciak will bring these two famous women to life in her presentation.  With over 30 years of experience, Ms. Papciak will bring the characters to life to the delight of children and adults alike on Saturday, March 16 at 2:00 PM.  No registration is required.  

Heart Soul Detroit

Local authors Matt Lee and Jenny Risher present their lovely new book Heart Soul Detroit which contains insightful interviews and artistic photographs of famous Detroiters from James Hoffa to Jack White to Nick Lidstrom and 47 others. The authors will discuss how they compiled their list, did the interviews and took their project to completion. Books will be available for sale and will be signed by the authors. This promises to be a delightful evening of remembering and speculating on Thursday, March 28 at 7:00 PM.

Black History Month Storyteller

Join noted storyteller Alfreda Harris as she dazzles us with stories about Martin Luther King, Jr and the Walk to Freedom exhibit on loan to the library from the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Visit the exhibit, located near the main Information Desk, then listen as Ms. Harris takes us on a journey in celebration of the Civil Rights movement. Suitable for tween, teens and adults on Tuesday, February 26 at 7:00 PM.

Diversity & Inclusion Movie - Akeelah and the Bee

In honor of Black History Month, and in partnership with the Plymouth Canton Citizens for Diversity and Inclusion, we are proud to show Akeelah and the Bee starring Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne and Keke Palmer.  It's the story of a young girl from south Los Angeles who tries to make it to the National Spelling Bee.  The movie will be followed by a discussion on preventing bullying and promoting inclusion led by PCCDI. Join us February 12 at 6:00 PM.

Celebrate Lunar New Year with Chef Tom Lin

Local Chef Tom Lin will share his extensive culinary skills with a Chinese cuisine cooking demonstration.  You will learn knife skills, cooking techniques and maybe even get a bit of a taste of some great food.  Chef Lin owns several local Chinese restaurants and is well-known and respected among his peers. Adults only please on Sunday, February 3 at 3:00 to 4:30 PM. Registration required.

Dear Rosa Parks

Join us Thursday, February 7 at 7:00 PM as we celebrate Black History Month and the 100th anniversary of Rosa Parks' birth with speaker Gregory J. Reed, Esq.  Mr. Reed, an attorney, author and advocate, has helped preserve and tell the Rosa Parks story, as well as garner proper recognition for Ms. Parks' acts as a true hero of the equality movement.  He has a special tale to tell of advocating on her behalf to get her proper recognition via the Medal of Freedom and the new postage stamp being issued in her honor this month.  Mr. Reed will sign copies of his book, Quiet Strength: the Faith, the Hope and the Heart of a Woman Who Changed a Nation.
