"November is Transgender Awareness Month, a time to honor, celebrate, and advocate for our transgender and gender diverse community. Transgender Awareness Month culminates with the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). Each year on November 20, LGBTQIA+ people everywhere pause to remember and mourn the lives we’ve lost to transphobic violence. This tradition began here in Boston in 1998 in response to the murder of beloved community member Rita Hester in Allston. Now, 23 years later, the TDOR is observed around the world."

October is Filipino American History Month

Filipino American History Month is celebrated in the United States during the month of October. Each year, Filipino American History Month is recognized with a special theme. The 2021 theme is “50 Years Since the First Young Filipino People's Far West Convention.” More than 300 young Filipino Americans participated in the first Young Filipino People's Far West Convention at Seattle University in 1971, sparking the beginning of the Filipino American Movement. September 15 through October 15 is National Hispanic Heritage Month (also called Latinx Heritage Month). Check out these titles written for, illustrated by, about, and by authors who represent Latinx experiences. These selections range from books meant to be read aloud, materials enjoyed by early readers, and books that can be read by older independent readers or with a caregiver.

Join us Wednesday, October 13 for some cider, donuts, and macabre crafts at the library. We will be making some gilded faux taxidermy, a Victorian inspired terrarium pendant, and have supplies for creating your own seasonal greeting cards appropriate for the season of spookiness. This program is intended for adults 18 and older and registration is required.

Twenty Years After 9/11: Chapter Books

9/11/2021 marks the twentieth anniversary of the attacks on DC, Manhattan, Arlington, and Stoneycreek, PA. These books share different perspectives on the attacks and what life was like from various perspectives. Read these with your family members and open a discussion on what this date was like for them, and how we have changed since as a nation.

Students aged 11-13 who enjoy engaging in science, technology, engineering, art, and math are invited to join us and explore various STEAM topics. First, STEAMx will introduce participants to a topic and its supporting ideas. From there, participants will be given a problem and challenged to engineer a solution or create an example. Challenging, unusual, and different, these programs are a great way to exercise the brain in the most fun way possible.
