Mystery

Be a sleuth, solve a puzzle, investigate the unknown.

Summer is here and we hope these are the best 62 days of your year! To help engage you in some good reading, the following is a list of chapter books about summer vacations and adventures with new and favorite book characters.

"It is an old maxim of mine that when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." --Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: "The Beryl Coronet"

"Boston PI Spenser faces a hot case and a personal crisis in the latest adventure in the iconic New York Times-bestselling series from author Ace Atkins"--.

"A notorious, international big game hunter and his beautiful, former flight attendant wife are gunned down at long range late one sweltering summer night while swimming naked on their seaside estate in opulent Rancho Bonita, California. Police investigators are convinced that the killer is a strident, outspoken animal rights activist with both military experience and a criminal record. The evidence against him would appear overwhelming--until rumors begin to surface that others may have had their own reasons for committing murder. The last thing flight instructor, aspiring Buddhist, and ex-government assassin Cordell Logan wants to do is become involved in the investigation. He and the accused, however, have mutual friends. Reluctant at first, Logan finds himself caught up in an increasingly confounding enigma, one that swirls around a popular Congressman with close ties to the White House, a European call girl ring, and a ruthless Czech crime boss who'll stop at nothing to protect his interests. Pursuing the truth will take Logan to places few others would dare go, exposing him to dangers that even he may not survive. Along with its four predecessors in the Cordell Logan mystery/thriller series--Flat Spin, Fangs Out, Voodoo Ridge, and The Three-Nine Line--Hot Start is a can't-put-it-down page-turner that will leave audiences breathless. Critics from Booklist to Publisher's Weekly to the Associated Press have hailed the series for its veracity and fine writing, vivid characters, generous dollops of humor, and the kind of pacing that keeps readers up at night. Hot Start may well be the best yet"--.

Maybe you missed these first time around?

Spiraled by Kendra Elliot

FBI Special Agent Ava McLane solves crimes; she doesn't witness them. When she's trapped in a mall without her weapon as a shooter picks off victims, she hides with a wounded teen and prays for her survival. But that's only the beginning... An epidemic of mass shootings has swept across Oregon. The young shooters terrify the public, committing random murders before taking their own lives. The task force assembled to solve the case--which includes Ava's boyfriend, detective Mason Callahan--remains stumped. And on top of this chaos, Ava's troubled twin sister reappears, throwing Ava's already-tumultuous life into a tailspin. An old-fashioned cop with a strong sense of duty, Mason struggles to find the cause of the shootings as workaholic Ava spins ever closer to breaking down. But can one detective save the lives of countless innocents--and prevent the woman he loves from going over the edge?.

A ring of truth by Michelle Cox

In this second book of the series, Henrietta and Clive delightfully rewrite Pride and Prejudice --with a hint of mystery! Newly engaged, Clive and Henrietta now begin the difficult task of meeting each other's family. "Difficult" because Clive has neglected to tell Henrietta that he is in fact the heir to the Howard estate and fortune, and Henrietta has just discovered that her mother has been hiding secrets about her past as well. When Clive brings Henrietta to the family estate to meet his parents, they are less than enthused about his impoverished intended. Left alone in this extravagant new world when Clive returns to the city, Henrietta finds herself more at home with the servants than his family, much to the disapproval of Mrs. Howard--and soon gets caught up in the disappearance of an elderly servant's ring, not realizing that in doing so she has become part of a bigger, darker plot. As Clive and Henrietta attempt to discover the truth in the two very different worlds unraveling around them, they both begin to wonder: Are they meant for each other after all?

Carly's granddad Eldon, owner of the ranch, is dead and Ted has been shot and may never walk again. Kate vows to find the killer. Kate finds out that Eldon was considering selling his ranch to an obscenely rich environmentalist.
