Join us on Monday, February 18 from 12:00-8:45 PM for an all-day family movie extravanganza.  You may bring pillows, snacks, even your own comfy blankets or chairs. 

12:00-1:00 - Wallace and Gromit shorts (G) Join the loveable duo of Wallace and Gromit; inventors of all manner of useful devices.
1:00-3:00 - The Incredibles (PG). A family of undercover superheroes, while trying to live the quiet suburban life, are forced into action to save the world.
3:30-5:30 - Spirited Away (PG). On a family outing, ten-year-old Chihiro loses her parents to a strange curse and stumbles upon a very weird holiday resort inhabited by bizarre gods and monsters.  It is there that she must learn the rules of the land in order to save her parents and herself. 
5:45-8:30 - Dark Knight Rises (P-13) Bane, a brutally ruthless terrorist leader, executes a sinister plan to tear apart Gotham and Batman's legacy piece by piece. Physically and spiritually pushed to the edge, Bruce Wayne must rediscover himself to 'Rise' and save his city.

University of Michigan FRS Workshops: Everybody Cooks!

This year at CPL, the University of Michigan's Museum of Natural History presents a series of three, fun Family Reading and Science workshops titled Just Like me: exploring culture, biology and the human experience. To tie in with their temporary exhibition at the museum called RACE: Are we so different? (February 2013-June 2013), they are focusing on and exploring how biology, anthropology, physics, geography and chemistry all play a part in race and culture.

We invite you to register for the second of three monthly workshops in the series titled Everybody Cooks! Exploring how geology, geography and human migration influenced food. The workshop takes place in the Community Room on Saturday, February 9, 2013, from 1:00-2:00 PM. You will learn that every culture has a cuisine, but why do the same ingredients, cooking techniques or types of food pop up all over the world? Families will learn how geology and geography relate to food, what "cultural transmission" is, and will also get to make their very own bread starter. Workshops are designed for children ages 6-11, accompanied by an adult. Online registration begins January 25.

Chapter 1: The Assembly

“They have failed when we needed them the most,” The old man said in a loud voice. “We must get another group to fulfill this mission and save the universe. We must do this! Are you all with me? This mission must be done. We alone can't stop this, but the right group - only the bravest, smartest, strongest, and most skillful - can stop the sun from exploding.”

In a raspy voice a white clocked man said “yessss, this group mussst be able to get to Sssaturn and get the plassmetic ray ssstaff and sssave the universsse.”

“Do you allow this, high council,” asked a black cloaked man.

“We do,” said the high council at the same time.

“Then, commence operation!”

Location: High Head Quarters, also known as HHQ -

“Sir, we must talk,” said Commander Bob.

“Yes, Commander Bob,” Said Leader Kern.

“We have been approved about the operation. The high council agreed.”

“WHAT? Why would they? This is a very dangerous mission.”

“Ahhh, Leader Kern, how nice it isss to ssssee you,” said the white cloaked man (just imagine him somewhere in the darkness, since the white cloaked man is invisible right now).

“Who is there?”

“It’s me, White Cloak.” (That is his name)

“White Cloak, stop acting like creepers.”

“Why? It’s nice to act like them, it makes me seem more dangerous than I really am.”

As we moved on to the next trial, I found myself checking everywhere around me in anticipation. Then, after what seemed like an eternity, we came to a gigantic gold door encrusted in jewels. Cautiously I pushed on it, it swung open, and it was surprisingly light. Raising my sword I walked in and saw… a sea of teddy bears blocking the exit.

2012 Tween Creative Writers

Check out the pieces submitted during the fall 2012 Tween Creative Writing Series.  Developed by a local Creative Writing Masters student, the kids were encouraged to stretch their writing skills and think outside the box.  Thanks to all of those that attended and took part.    

Snail Mail for Seniors: Create A Card

Snail Mail for Seniors is a non-profit group set up to send greeting cards and children's drawings to senior citizens free of charge. They aim particularly for the senior that does not usually receive many visitors or mail. Come to the Purple Room anytime between 2:00-4:00 PM on January 3 and create a card to send to these oft-overlooked members of our community. We will be focus on creating Valentine's Day cards. All ages are welcome to participate. Supplies provided.

Little Explorers Healthy Kid Demos

Come join the staff of Premier Athletics: Little Explorers as they jump and tumble, dance and sing.  This program incorporates music and games to inspire children to learn and grow both mentally and physically.  Caregivers and their children aged two to five are encouraged to check it out for themselves on Tuesday, December 18 at either 10:00 AM or 2:00 PM.  Please only attend one session.

Join us on Friday December 28, for an all-day family movie extravaganza starting at 10:00 AM with a film for our youngest patrons and gradually getting more sophisticated, until the 3:00 PM showing of Snow White and the Huntsman.

You may bring pillows, snacks, even your own comfy lawn chairs if you like.
