Read Aloud web badge

Canton Public Library is proud to participate in Read Aloud 15 Minutes, a national campaign to have every child being read aloud to for 15 minutes every day starting at birth. This month, the Read Aloud movement emphasizes that reading aloud (1) helps build children's vocabulary, (2) promotes healthy brain development, and (3) continues to benefit a child even after s/he can read independently.

Today the American Library Association announces its Youth Book & Media Awards, including the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award. Many of us know and love Dr. Seuss, an author who created engaging stories for beginning readers, and this award celebrates books that continue that tradition today. If you need a fun suggestion for a beginning reader, this list has some great ideas. Most of the books are located either in J READER or in J PICTURE BOOK.

For more information about this award and its recipients, check the ALA website.

Don't throw it to Mo! by David A Adler

"Mo is the youngest kid on the Robins football team. The kids on the rival team tease him for being a 'butterfingers' who's too tiny to catch the ball. But Mo's coach has a plan up his sleeve to turn Mo's little size into a big win for the Robins"--.

From Storytime

Try this rhyme at home:

     I have ten little fingers and they all belong to me.
     I can make them do things, would you like to see?
     I can shut them up tight;
I can open them wide;
     I can put them together;
And I can make them all hide.
     I can put them up high;
I can put them down low;
     I can fold them together,
And hold them just so.

Did you miss our pumpkin storytime this week? Don't worry, here's what you missed, plus a few more suggestions for a squash storytime of your own. It can be hard to find pumpkin stories that aren't focused on Halloween, but most of these stories manage to incorporate pumpkins without the holiday.

From Storytime

Try this rhyme at home:

   Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
   The first one says, "oh my, it's getting late!"
   The second one says, "there is frost in the air."
   The third one says, "but we don't care!"
   The fourth one says, "let's run and run and run."
   The fifth one says, "are you ready for some fun?"
   Then woooooo went the wind and OUT (with a clap) went the lights,
   And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.

Canton Public Library Receives Grant from Target for Family Reading Program

CANTON, MI—The Canton Public Library announced the renewal of a $2,000 Target grant to be used to continue to support the Family Reading Night program.

“Our partnership with Target continues with the awarding of this grant, which allows the Canton Public Library and the Friends of the Canton Public Library to maintain our commitment to early childhood literacy and improving lives in our community,” said Eva Davis, library director.

Over 2000 people have participated in the Target Family Reading Night program since its 2009 inception. The program offers stories, games and snacks to families with children ages 4-9 and provides a book for the family to take home and share. It encourages early childhood literacy by demonstrating techniques and supplying a book for families to model at home.

The Friends of the Canton Public Library also sponsor this program. “At Target, our local grants are making a difference in communities across the country,” said Laysha Ward, President, Community Relations, Target. “We’re proud to partner with the Canton Public Library as part of our ongoing commitment to strengthen communities where our guests and team members live and work.”

For information on the Family Reading Night Program or to register for the program, visit www.cantonpl.org or call the library at 734-397-0999.
