The move is on.

More than 90,000 books and other materials will be shifted as the Canton Public Library takes over its new quarters on Canton Center Road.

The library, which has been located on the third floor of the Canton Administration Building since 1980, will be closed until after the move is completed. It closed on Sunday (Oct. 16) and will remain closed for service until Monday, Nov. 14.

Before re-opening, a public dedication and open house is planned for Sunday, Nov. 13 from 1-4 p.m. The open house will feature a ribbon cutting, flag ceremony, refreshments and a preview of the new 31,500 square foot building.

"We can hardly wait," said Rebecca Havenstein-Coughlin, assistant director of the library. "We're running on adrenaline right now and that should keep us going."

"I think the public is as excited as we are," she added. "We've been planning this since 1985."

Five teams of three are labelling the materials for the move, which begins in earnest today (Oct. 19) when the Hallett Company from Chicago begins transporting the books to their new homes.

Havenstein-Coughlin said the major part of the move should be completed by Sunday.

During the move the library book drops will remain open. Residents with a library card can also use it at any of the other area libraries in the Wayne Oakland Library Federation (WOLF).

Besides moving materials to the new library, the library staff will also be shelving, cleaning, painting, training on new equipment, filing cards and linking materials to the computer system.

"We've still got a lot of work ahead," Havenstein-Coughlin said.

The library will begin new hours once the move is complete. It will open at 9:30a.m. Monday through Saturday and at noon on Sunday. The library will close at 9 p.,. on Monday through Thursday and at 5 p.m. on Friday through Sunday.

A new equipment room  will also be added at the library, where residents can use typewriters and computers.

A special children's celebration is also being planned for Nov. 19 from 1-4 p.m. at the new location. It will include clowns, a magic show, and a raffle.

Phone lines to the library will remain the same (397-0999 for general and 397-0062 for reference).

Library closing

Patrons of the Canton Public Library will have to go elsewhere for their reading materials.

The library at township hall is closing to make way for the new facility just a few hundred yards away.

The library closed today and will remain off limits until Nov. 14 when the new facility is scheduled to open.

Starting Wednesday, professional library and office movers will head in and begin transferring books, shelves and everything eles from the old library to the new one.

The book drop will remain open and residents are encouraged to take advantage of other nearby libraries.

The new facility is three times larger than the current library and will provide a wide variety of new services and amenities.
