Communications

E. Davis shared with the board a letter from a grateful Otsego County patron, who wanted to thank us for the variety of large print books he was able to obtain from CPL via interloan.

The library has been certified under the Library of Michigan Quality Service Audit Checklist (QSAC) as both Essential and Enhanced. The certification is good for three years. (The highest level – Excellent – will be unattainable for the foreseeable future, as CPL will be unable to comply with some requirements - tuition reimbursement program for certified staff members, providing live online reference services, etc.)

The library also received congratulatory letters from State Representatives Kurt Heise and Dian Slavens for being one of only 13 Michigan libraries that received Enhanced certification.

Director’s Report

A school bus transporting children to 1st Grade Round Up failed to heed a sign prohibiting busses from using the circle drive in front of the building, and struck the overhang. Sheryl Rzetelny has been in contact with METS’ (Michigan Educational Transport Services) insurance company; she was also referred by the Canton Township Building Department to a structural engineering firm, which will send someone out to verify that the building’s structural integrity has not been impaired.

On March 31, the Friends of the Library will receive 20% of frozen yogurt purchases made by customers who present a printed fundraising flyer or display a picture of the flyer on their smartphone.

Davis shared a double-sided white paper from Plante & Moran regarding several personal property tax bills that are pending and are supposed to be on the ballot in August.

The fourth draft of the community survey (being taken in conjunction with Canton Leisure Services) had been emailed to board members. The survey is currently behind schedule but L. Golden anticipates that it might be out mid-April. Results should be available at a regularly scheduled Study Session at Township Hall, 7:00 pm on Tuesday, June 3.

Everyone’s Reading is underway. Before You Know Kindness author Chris Bohjalian will appear at the Community House in Southfield and in Birmingham at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, both on April 30; free tickets are available at the Service Desk.

Davis recognized L. Papa for the work he and his staff did in decommissioning old computers as part of the renovation project. 20 were given recently to the Vista Maria family services agency and others were cannibalized for repair parts.

Chicks 4 Charity has chosen the library to be the beneficiary of their upcoming trivia contest fundraiser at the Basement Burger Bar on April 15. The team registration fees and $1 of every beer sale will go to the library; the library is fielding two teams; the board is encouraged to do so, as well.

First Grade Round Up is going well; Davis commended both the Circulation and Information Services departments for their organization and hard work.

Davis will be meeting with Erin McGregor, the director of secondary education for Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, to discuss expanding library partnerships with PCCS; one item up for discussion is the possibility of the library hosting GED classes.

Unfinished Business & General Orders

Patron Service Improvement Project (PSIP) Review - Not all invoices have been received and some punch list items remain undone, but at the moment, the project is coming in under budget. (A full accounting will be available at the April board meeting.) Davis thanked all the department heads and the design teams (especially S. Rzetelny and L. Papa), whose hard work ensured that all went smoothly. Davis hopes to finish replacing the flooring in the main library as part of next year’s budget.

New Business

Public Library Association (PLA) Conference Review - Vice-Chair N. Eggenberger attended the conference and made contact with representatives of both TMC (the firm that made the new furniture around the columns in the area between the Service Desk and International Language) and Overdrive, supplier of most of the library’s eBooks and eAudio books. Eggenberger’s impression, after attending many workshops, was that CPL is way ahead of the curve as compared to most other libraries. She said that E. Davis’ presentation on the LibraryAware Award was excellent. A panel on the Library of the Future yielded suggestions for mini-libraries (one, in a red telephone box from the UK) and unusual items to circulate (bicycles, cooking equipment.)

L. Papa delegated Digital Resources Developer Alyssa Beesley to gather information from the many database companies in attendance at the conference. A decision on which integrated library system (ILS) to purchase will need to be made when Innovative Interfaces rolls out its newest iteration, as the current version of Millennium will no longer be supported. The Innovative Users’ Group conference will be in Detroit in May; Papa, Beesley and Systems Administrator C. Swanberg will attend.
