Director’s Report

Davis acknowledged the presence in the audience of Friends of the Library Secretary John Spencer; in July, the Friends’ bookstore, Secondhand Prose, sold approximately $7,300 worth of used books and other materials. The bookstore will now be open on the Sunday of the monthly Bag Sale weekend.

September is National Library Card Sign Up Month; a letter to the editor from Davis as well as an editorial appeared in the local edition of the Observer newspaper.

The annual Stuff the Truck event with the Detroit Diaper Bank will be held November 20-21; the organization will partner with the library to hold a 5th birthday party in April 2014.

The library’s second Lego contest will be held September 28-29 and they are looking for “celebrity” judges; the 2013 theme is Your Dream Home.

The library will be closed to the public on Monday October 14 for a staff in-service. The longevity recognition ceremony will be at 4:00 PM; the board is invited to attend.

Community Relations department head Laurie Golden has been appointed to the Board of Education’s Communication, Legislation and Partnerships subcommittee.

The October meeting will see a 3rd Quarter Budget Amendment request, a Strategic Plan update, and Chris DeBear of Library Design Associates will present an overview of the Patron Service Improvement Project, for board approval of the project proposal.

Bruce Feiler – author of this year’s Everyone’s Reading selection, The Secrets of Happy Families – will speak at a program hosted by the MetroNet libraries at the Hindu Temple on Tuesday, October 29 at 7:00 PM; the Friends will provide the reception for this event. It is a free, ticketed event so interested board members should contact R. Havenstein-Coughlin for tickets as soon as possible. L. Golden and her department have done a stellar job in creating family programming for October, leading up Feiler’s appearance.
