MeL

MeLCat has resumed borrowing privileges. Available materials may be limited as not all Michigan libraries are participating yet.

MeLCat lets you search most of the public and academic libraries in Michigan and request to have items marked 'Available' delivered to your home library. Requests are free and anyone with a CPL card is eligible. Patrons who use MeLCat interlibrary loan agree to abide by its policies.

Books go out for 28 days and the majority of audiovisual items for 14 days. In most cases, materials with a 28 day loan period may be renewed using My Account or by calling the Checkout Desk. Renewals are one time only for three weeks and may be denied if there's a hold on the item at the loaning library. Note that MelCat items are not automatically renewed before they are due.

Interlibrary Loan & Research Databases at Risk

MeLYesterday, the Michigan legislature's budget conference committee proposed another 40% cut to funding for joint library services, from $10 million to $6 million. A minimum funding level of $10 million is required to receive federal matching grant dollars of $5 million. These federal matching funds for MeLCat interlibrary loan and 25 MeL databases are at stake; due to the local economy and cuts to local funding associated with the recession, the Canton Public Library does not have the revenue to pay for interlibrary loan or online genealogical, historical, or reference products if the state legislature does not act to maintain statewide library services — Canton residents would lose access to these resources.
