Furry Friends to Follow

Do you love animals? Facebook and Instagram offers many furry friends you can follow. Oh, and some have even authored books too! ;-) How cool is that?! Check them out here!

This follow-up to Jenkins's best-selling memoir Esther the Wonder Pig picks up exactly where the first book left off, as Jenkins, his partner and coauthor Derek Walter, and their animal family make the move to a farm in Campbellville, Ontario. Using his trademark self-deprecating humor, Jenkins, aided by writer Caprice Crane and Walter, chronicles the zany misadventures that accompany their effort to transform the derelict farm into a successful sanctuary for rescues. Readers will share in the drama as Esther develops a "teenage" attitude and escapes the farm, challenges emerge with over-reaching volunteers, and Jenkins and Walter struggle with isolation and loneliness as they settle into country life far away from old friends and jobs. Jenkins is refreshingly candid about the huge learning curve that defined the sanctuary's early years and rightfully proud of its success (to date they have taken in more than 50 rescued animals). Includes 14 "Esther-approved" (vegan) recipes.

When realtor Jenkins answers an email from an old school friend about a pig, he has no idea how much life is going to change for him and his magician partner Derek Walter. Esther was supposed to be a minipig. Jenkins was told she would grow to be about 70 pounds and that she had been spayed because females can get aggressive when they go into heat. Unfortunately, his friend had misled the author. This heartwarming story about owning a 600-pound pig, becoming vegan, and opening a farm animal rescue retreat in the country takes readers through Jenkins agreeing to adopt the tiny piglet, without talking to Walter, documenting all of Esther's escapades and illnesses, to finally transporting her to her new pasture and making her an Internet sensation. The authors describe the hazards of raising a pig in a 1,000-square-foot space already occupied by cats and dogs, Esther-proofing the house so she didn't help herself to the contents of the kitchen, bolting her water bowl to the wall, and, of course, housebreaking a pig (no easy task).

Artist and designer Ridge’s business was tanking, along with her attitude and emotional well-being. So why, Ridge wondered, would God have a bedraggled donkey show up in her driveway, adding to the stresses of her family? While it didn’t make sense to keep Flash, as he was lovingly dubbed, Ridge and her family made room for the poor wandering animal in their hearts and home. Ridge figured out, sometimes the hard way, how to properly care for Flash, and as she paid attention to his needs, she learned a whole lot of positive lessons about herself, her faith, and her life. Ridge examines some of life’s most difficult issues with insight gained from sharing a home with an equine personality, summarizing lessons learned in pithy statement that conclude chapters (“Be a service animal; “Make things right with others”). Readers will be clamoring for more of Flash as soon as they digest the last story in this powerful and uplifting memoir.

Travels with Casey by Benoit Denizet-Lewis

A moody Labrador and his insecure human take a funny, touching cross-country RV trip into the heart of America's relationship with dogs."I don't think my dog likes me very much," New York Times Magazine writer Benoit Denizet-Lewis confesses at the beginning of his journey with his nine-year-old Labrador-mix, Casey. Over the next four months, thirty-two states, and 13,000 miles in a rented motor home, Denizet-Lewis and his canine companion attempt to pay tribute to the most powerful interspecies bond there is, in the country with the highest rate of dog ownership in the world. On the way, Denizet-Lewis--known for his deeply reported dispatches from far corners of American life--meets an irresistible cast of dogs and dog-obsessed humans. Denizet-Lewis and Casey hang out with wolf-dogs in Appalachia, search with a dedicated rescuer of stray dogs in Missouri, spend a full day at a kooky dog park in Manhattan, get pulled over by a K9 cop in Missouri, and visit "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Millan in California. And then there are the pet psychics, dog-wielding hitchhikers, and two nosy women who took their neighbor to court for allegedly failing to pick up her dog's poop.Travels With Casey is a delightfully idiosyncratic blend of memoir and travelogue coupled with an exploration of a dog-loving America. What does our relationship to our dogs tell us about ourselves and our values? Denizet-Lewis explores those questions--and his own canine-related curiosities and insecurities--during his unforgettable road trip through our dog-loving nation.
