Pie and Positivity

****POSTPONED to January 24

The third week of January is officially one of the most depressing weeks of the year. However, nestled right in the middle of that week is a little known gem of a day dedicated to honoring a delicious desert. Wednesday, January 23 is known as National Pie Day (not to be confused with Pi Day which the U.S. Congress recognizes as March 14. National Pie Day, is an annual celebration of pies started sponsored by the American Pie Council) and we have decided to celebrate.

Join us for Pie and Positivity a drop in event designed to chase away the winter blues and help you focus on some of the brighter things in life. Pair your slice of pie with one of our Gratitude Tracker Spark Sheets - part of our Electrify Your Winter 2019 Spark Your Life packet and we will have you feeling brighter in no time.

Join us in the self service area while supplies last.

Film Screening: Alice's Ordinary People

Join us as we welcome filmmaker Craig Dudnick for a special screening of his documentary, Alice's Ordinary People - the story of an ordinary Chicago woman who stood up to injustice in her community.

Alice’s life story reads like a history of the civil rights movement. She fought 'Willis Wagons,' second class structures built to relieve overcrowding in Chicago schools which served the African American community. In 1966, Dr. King came to Chicago; she and her husband marched with him. It was at this time that Dr. King joined Reverend Jesse Jackson and Reverend James Bevel, forming Operation Breadbasket.

Under the leadership of Reverend Jackson, the months that Alice and her “ordinary people” spent picketing led to real change. But it was through her Political Education class that Alice had her most significant impact. Over a four-year period, thousands were trained to work in independent political campaigns. This new force was integral to the re-election of Ralph Metcalf to Congress (this time as an independent democrat), to the election of Harold Washington as mayor of Chicago, and to making Barack Obama our first African American President.

Movie Presentation: Essential Arrival

Join local film maker, Arifa Javed, for a special showing of her documentary Essential Arrival

Immigration is a hot-button political issue in America these days, but, unsurprisingly, that contentious, narrow debate tells only part of the story. This film seeks to broaden the immigration conversation by turning attention to Indian immigrants, often deemed a 'model minority' for their focus on higher education and their rapid collective progression up the economic ladder. Given the unique demands of America's new-age, hi-tech economy going forward, Indian immigrants, who hold disproportionate numbers of degrees in science and technology fields, stand to be among the primary driving forces of American progress in the 21st century. In playing that role, this diverse group follows in a grand tradition that should be familiar to all Americans, evoking cultural pluralism, the immigrant experience and the American Dream.
