Celebrate Children's Book Week 2021

Join us for Children's Book Week from Monday, May 3 -- Sunday, May 9. This celebration of children's and teen literature draws attention to the importance of good books for young people.

Visit Every Child a Reader to find printable bookmarks, drawing guides, superpower challenges, and a poster with even more activities. 

Ramp up the fun with these other suggestions:

  • Dress up as your favorite children's book character.
  • Take the StoryWalk behind the library, through Heritage Park.
  • Browse our Early Literacy resources. Try one out and tell us if you liked it. 
  • Check out a Kids eBook using one of our library apps: Hoopla, Libby, Kanopy.
  • Submit a May We Suggest Kids request to get personalized recommendations.

Hey Kids,

This year Children's Book Week is from May 4 to May 10, 2020. It's a week dedicated to one of my favorite things. Every day I sit by the window surrounded by shelves of these amazing treasures. These books hold so many amazing, fantastic, touching, beautiful, funny, and inspiring stories and it is such a pleasure to see them go home with all of you.

I won't be able to see you this week, but you can still check out children's ebooks so that you can celebrate all your favorite titles. Every Child a Reader also provides printable resources to help you join the fun:

I hope you enjoy these activities. You could even come up with your own way to commemorate Children's Book Week at home. If you want to share your celebration, use #BookWeek2020 and #BookWeek2020atHome to join the festivities on social media. I miss you.

100th Anniversary of Children's Book Week

Join us to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Children's Book Week from April 29th - May 5th.

It's a great time to acknowledge your favorite children's books, authors, and illustrators OR to find new favorites to share. Get involved on your own, or participate with family and friends while you explore the amazing world of children's books.

Our week-long festivities offer many opportunities to join in the fun.

  • Register for Lit Lab: Children's Book Week, open to families with kids ages 4-9 (Monday, April 29th).
  • Dress up as children's book character and visit the Children's Reference Desk for a small prize (all week).
  • Pick up Children's Book Week activities and bookmarks, available on the Children's Reference Desk (all week).
  • Test your knowledge of Children's Book Illustrators at the Teen Reference Desk (all week).
  • Stop by for Free Comic Book day and May the Fourth (Saturday, May 4th).
  • Bonus: this is also Screen Free Week, and you can find activities at screenfree.org.

Hey Kids,

Did you know that it is Children's Book Week? This year, from April 30 - May 6, we're celebrating children's literature at the library. I'm joining in the fun by dressing up as one of my favorite book characters, Winnie-the-Pooh. Who is your favorite character? 

Even though I love Pooh Bear, there are always new stories to discover. Below are some great stories I've read this year. I hope to see you soon at the library - please come show or tell me about your favorite children's books and characters.

This year is the 99th anniversary of Children's Book Week. This celebration of children's and teen literature draws attention to the importance of good books for young people. This year, the program inspiration is "One World, Many Stories" and celebrations last from April 30 to May 6. 

Show your support of children's literature at the library during the week of April 30 to May 6. Come dressed as your favorite children's book character and take your picture with Thorndyke our library bear. Or stop by our Children's Reference Desk to pick up additional activities. #CBW18

The Frog Prince Book Discussion

Second through Fourth graders celebrate both Children's Book Week and Michigan Month with a book discussion featuring Jon Scieszka's The Frog Prince, Continued. Scieszka is a Michigan author known for writing humorous stories. Join us to talk about this fabulous fractured fairy tale.

It's not too late to sign up! Register online beginning April 26, then pick up a copy of the book at the Children's Help Desk before the book discussion.
