Interlibrary Loan

With ILL, you can use your CPL card to borrow items not owned by the library. To get started, choose an option:

Receiving Items

The time it takes for an item to arrive varies; usually within 2 weeks for MeLCat items, perhaps longer for ILL requests due to distance. When your items arrive you'll be notified, and we'll hold items one week for pickup at the Checkout Desk. You must check out items with the account used to request them, and must pay any applicable fees first.

Returning Items

All Interlibrary loan items checked out at the Canton Public Library must be returned to the Canton Public Library with ILL bands/labels and any due date cards intact to ensure proper check-in and return to the lending library. Charges will apply to lost, overdue, or damaged items. Article photocopies are yours to keep unless otherwise noted.

MeLCat

MeL LogoMeLCat lets you search most of the public and academic libraries in Michigan, and request to have any items marked 'Available' delivered to your home library. Requests are free and anyone with a CPL card is eligible. Patrons who use MeLCat interlibrary loan agree to abide by its policies.

Books go out for 28 days and most audiovisual items for 14 days. In most cases, materials with a 28 day loan period may be renewed using My Account or by calling the Checkout Desk. Renewals are one time only for three weeks and renewals may be denied if there's a hold on the item at the loaning library.

ILL Request

ILL Requests are for items not found in MeLCat; or for journal articles not in CPL databases. Requests made through the ILL Department for non-MeLCat items may be billed $7.50 each once the request is processed. Please note that textbooks, bestsellers, or items published within the last 3-6 months are not available for borrowing. For those items you can suggest that CPL purchase them.

The lending library decides how long to loan the items, so the due date will vary. You can contact CPL to request to renew ILL items several days before the due date. Indicate you would like to renew an ILL item and provide your name, card barcode, and the item's title and author. The lending library may grant permission for renewal, usually for two more weeks when allowed. You'll be contacted if the renewal is different or denied.
