Monster Mash Halloween Grab & Go

Come to the Children's Desk and show us your BOOtiful costumes during our open hours on Halloween weekend, Saturday, October 30 and Sunday, October 31. If you do, we will give you a fun Halloween Grab & Go activity kit. If you aren't dressed up just say "Trick or Treat" and pick up a kit, as well.

Registration is not required. Quantities are limited and available ONLY while supplies last.

Check out these titles written for, illustrated by, about, and by authors who represent Latinx experiences. These selections range from books meant to be read aloud, materials enjoyed by early readers, and books that can be read by older independent readers or with a caregiver.

The Proposed 2022 Budget Hearing was opened for discussion.  

2022 PROPOSED BUDGET APPROVAL

M. Farell moved and A. Watts supported the motion to adopt the Proposed 2022 Budget amount of $ 6,700,900. (See Attachment A)

The motion passed unanimously 21/9-16-1BH

TAX RESOLUTION

A. Watts moved and C. Spas supported the resolution to approve certifying the rate for tax levy of 1.4590 mills for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2022.

COMMUNICATIONS — Director Eva Davis shared a Thank You card from Ypsilanti District Library management and staff members who had toured the CPL staff area in advance of ordering Trendway office furniture for their own space.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT

As of August 31, the library is 66% through the year and Fringes and Insurance are trending high, due to a large payment made to MERS in January and insurance premiums expenditures, also made earlier in the year. The 3rd Quarter Budget Amendment in October will bring some revenue and expenditures in line.

Also in October, the board will see a preview demonstration of the new BiblioCommons website, which is on track for a full public launch on November 29th.

The focus of this year’s annual fall donation solicitation will be improvements to the Rebecca Havenstein-Coughlin Memorial Courtyard. Library staff are working with Michael Coughlin in this endeavor.

TRUSTEE COMMENTS — Trustee Jasmine Lee asked if the new website will retain the Google virtual tour of the library (it will).

Trustee Claire Spas asked if the new HVAC units are all running at capacity yet. Business Services Department Head Marian Nicholson said that they are still working the calibration of the air handler equipment.

Board Chair Nancy Eggenberger thanked Davis for her willingness to serve the Canton community through her participation as Chair of the Police Transparency and Guidance Subcommittee, a part of the Canton Coalition for Inclusive Communities.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS & GENERAL ORDERS

Additional 2021 Payment to MERS — The board reviewed a proposal to make a one-time payment of $525,000 to the Municipal Employees Retirement System (MERS). The payment would fully fund the closed employee pension plan as of the plan’s valuation on 12/31/2020.

M. Farell moved and A. Watts supported a motion to approve a one-time payment of $525,000 to the MERS pension fund.

The motion passed unanimously 21/9-16-1

NEW BUSINESS

2022 Schedule of Board Meetings and Library Closures (1st look) —The trustees will vote on the proposed calendar at the October meeting.

CPL at Canton Leisure Services Trick or Treat Story Trail

Get dressed up in your best costume and visit us on Canton Leisure Services's Trick or Treat Story Trail. The Canton Public Library will be joined by Canton Public Safety in Heritage Park for fall time, fun time, dress up walk along the story trail on Thursday, October 7 from 4-7:30pm. The selected story is for all ages! Registration is required per trick or treater and will be done through Leisure Service at this link. Fees may apply.

Special note: the trail is a mile long so make sure to bring your walking shoes, strollers or wagons. If you have a later time slot a flashlight is suggested!

Macabre Crafts

Victorian haunted table setting with spiderweb border

Join us Wednesday, October 13 for some cider, donuts, and macabre crafts at the library. We will be making some gilded faux taxidermy, a Victorian inspired terrarium pendant, and have supplies for creating your own seasonal greeting cards appropriate for the season of spookiness. This program is intended for adults 18 and older and registration is required.

Rob Crozier Jazz Ensemble - Live!

​​The Rob Crozier Jazz Ensemble is a jazz ensemble based in Ann Arbor focused on presenting the work of the singing bassist/multi-instrumentalist/composer Rob Crozier. After a whirlwind performance at the 2019 Detroit Jazz Festival, this fine group continues to wow audiences with its high energy approach to modern jazz. You can expect hard swinging modern jazz, a couple of spacious ballads, and a true variety of world music infused originals.

Registration required and will begin September 23rd.

Haunted Travels of Michigan Presents: Step Into Darkness

A night of mystery and the unexplained awaits.  Join award-winning author, Kat Tedsen, as she tells the story of a remarkable turn-of-the-century Michigan Spirit Painter who believed the dead guided her hand in foretelling the future of America and the world. Her vision of the otherside and her final painting are sure to leave chills. Next, Kat will share her own personal account of a patient she worked with at Eloise Psychiatric Hospital in the mid-1970’s. A young man who descended into a world of night terrors. Were they part of his delusional state or could it have been more? 

This program has been designed for adults 18 and up. Registration is required and will begin September 23rd.
