It's that time of year again! The Canton Public Library offers a selection of Oscar-nominated films, the books that inspired them, and the music to accompany it all. Below a a few of the nominees with more to come. Tune in to the live award presentation ceremony on Sunday, February 26th.

Trivia Night at the Library!

Come play trivia in a  relaxed environment. Feel free to bring a team or drop in on your own and connect with others. Participants compete for prizes by answering a challenging range of questions on pop culture, sports, science, history, etc. Light refreshments will be provided. Teams are limited to 6 people.

Over the past year Carrie Fisher published her 8th book and reprised the role that propelled her to fame. While best know as Princess Leia in the "Star Wars" universe, Fisher wrote numerous novels and memoirs, starred in dozens of films and television shows, and toured her one-woman stage shows around the country. The child of Hollywood royalty Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, she struggled with drug and alcohol addiction much of her adult life. This struggle fueled Fisher's solo pursuits on stage and in print. She became known in her own right as a survivor, an independent spirit, and an inspiration to people worldwide. It speaks to her tough character that Carrie Fisher will long be remembered with a gun in her hand and a smile on her face.

Steve Dillon, Comic Artist Who Helped Create ‘Preacher,’ Dies at 54

A spoof of every cliché in the western film genre, telling the story of an African American sheriff who is sent to clean up a frontier town, with unpredictable results.

"Howe shattered records, threw elbows and helped the Detroit Red Wings win four Stanley Cups, becoming an idol to Wayne Gretzky and countless other Canadians while also helping the sport attract American fans." (ESPN) Locally, Gordie Howe was known as an inspiration to the community, interacting with the public and participating in charity work. It is undeniable that Howe helped Detroit earn the moniker of Hockeytown and, as a testament to his popularity in the US and his home country of Canada,  Howe will be immortalized as the namesake for the Gordie Howe International Bridge to be built adjacent to the Ambassador Bridge over the Detroit River. Hockey great Gordie Howe retired after 25 winning seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. But he realized that retirement just didn't work for him. Through hard work, perseverance, and the loving support of his wife and family, he and his sons managed to prove the critics wrong by winning several championships for the team.

We bid farewell to Muhammad Ali this weekend at the age of 74. Ali will long be remembered as one of the greatest professional boxers in recorded history as well as one of the greatest American athletes of the 20th Century. Known for his spirit of defiance, Ali's larger than life persona in photographs, in print, and on TV was equally important as a tool for social activism.
