Outdoors

Immerse yourself in the natural world around us.

As we have increased our time at home over the past year, taking full advantage of summer fun in our own CPL backyard is a must! There are so many fun things to do without having to go out and spend a lot of money. Even if you invest in some new games, you can use them all summer and for years to come. Some days just sand, shovels and buckets keep the kids busy, while cooling off with some water action when it gets hot. We also have books at the library to help get some of those backyard ideas coming. Head back to 62 days of summer for more ways to participate in the summer program.

Hey Kids,

You might have heard a little something about the sun going dark on August 21. In honor of this amazing event, we have a few out-of-this-world programs coming up in August: a visit from a traveling planetarium (requires registration) and an eclipse viewing gathering (no registration necessary). To prepare for the big day you can also check out some books on this amazing phenomenon. For more information on viewing the eclipse safely, NASA has answers for you. Happy viewing!

Bear Hugs,

Thorndyke

The well-known author of the Paddington Bear books has passed away at 91.

"A chance encounter with a toy bear in a London shop spawned a long line of books, a BBC TV series, a feature film and a lot of merchandise. A prolific writer, he also created The Herbs, featuring Parsley the Lion, which became a successful TV series and the tale-telling guinea pig, Olga da Polga. And for adults there was Monsieur Pamplemousse, the retired detective turned restaurant critic and his bloodhound, Pommes Frites (BBC Obituary)"

The Water Cycle

All the water in the world by George Ella Lyon

So what happens when you tell leaders that they can definitely--right now - reduce the number of children who have asthma attacks, save thousands of Americans from dying of respiratory disease, cut energy bills, increase the security of our energy supply, make it easier for everyone to get around town, increase the number of jobs in their community--all while increasing the long-term stability of the global climate?  In these times, when it's less and less clear if the federal government will be willing to tackle climate change, Bloomberg and Pope lay out a powerfully persuasive argument about how cities can play an outsize role in fighting and reversing the dangerous effects of a warming planet.
